Childhood Memories - Part I

I have been hooked to jingles since I was like...this high.

As far back as my grey cells allow me, the first ever jingle I memorised was,

Bol Sakhi Bol Tera Raaz Kya Hai?
Kya Hai Tere Khushi Ka Raaz
Tu Bata De Mujhko Aaj

Mala-D Hai Mera Raaz
Garbh Nirodhak Goliyan, Mala-D Mala-D

See. I was too young to know what Garbh is, leave alone Garbh Nirodhak Goliyan. Just to quote Bhuvan Bhaiyya - "Itni Hindi To Meri Tau Na Jaane". I remember singing / mouthing the first couple of lines in front of some guests. Quite obviously, my parents were embarassed and the next thing I saw, was them (guests included) with raised heckles controlling their chuckles. (Sorry, bad expression.)

Anywhichways, the smart kid that I was (I still am, leaving aside the kid part of it), I quickly realised that the jingle was quite inappropriate for the occasion and promptly subjected my vocal chords to "Meri Jaan, Meri Jaan. Sunday to Sunday."

Much later, when I grew a bit taller (in height and in stature) and a bit more worldly wise thanks to generous inputs from my Big B, it was only then that I realised the full scale of my childhood folly.

Hey nice stuff!...I also used to mouth a lot of these jingles(since i always loved singing)...My favs were:
"Paani mein rehke bhi yeh kam gale
Dheron kapde dhoye aur jyaada chale...Washing powder Nirma! Washing powder Nirma! iske jhaag ne jaadu kar diya..."
And of course "doodh, doodh, doodh"

Nice Post....refreshed my childhood memories as well...looking fwd to part 2...
cheers!!

Haha... Didn't know you had a blog.

Speaking of jingles, I used to love this one for some sanitary napkin brand (Carefree/Stayfree) I guess. It went, Chup chup baithi ho zaroor koi baat hai... something something... I used to sing the jingle all the time...

Oh and regarding my last post, Yes, it was "inspired" (if I may use the word) by the IIM-A confluence quiz. How do you know about it? Were you there too?

@ Surya - Doodh, Doodh, Doodh was quite late... in the early or mid-90s I think. So had grown a bit old by then to sing along.

@ Pleiades - Am on a increase-blog-hits spree. So commenting on other's blogs left, right and centre. :o)
And your parents must have gone crazy hearing your "Chhup Chhup Baithi Ho" line.
BTW, I wasn't at IIM-A. Have already passed out of Yum-Bee-Ya. Had been to Confluence last year when the balding QM Basu hosted the quiz. Quiz was bad, but came out trumps. Who hosted it and who won this year?

Here is another of my favourite jingles. Radio influence:
Yeh Dher Se Kapde Main Kaise Dho...oon
Achcha Sabun Kaun Sa Laaoon
Kapdon Ko Jo Ujala Bana De
Umra Badhaye, Chamak Laaye
Koi Bata De, Mujhe To Koi Bata De

BTW, do either of you remember the "Kasla Vichar Kartoy Ramayya" radio ad for some chhapra brand. Have been trying to recollect the name for a long time?

Haha... That's one strategy.. ;) Or get a girlfriend with a top-rated blog and make her link to yours.. :P

This year it was hosted by Harsha, which was actually not that bad. He's a great compere. What worked against us was the distribution of questions since the format was a direct pass. We got a few very lousy ones and some were total sitters, none of which we got :( We came in fourth. Adwait, Devdas and Ravi's team from IIM-A won it (40grands!!!!) and Ramkey from ISB came in second I guess. You might know them... The whole thing kinda sucked but I consoled my self thinking that this was only my first ever Biz quiz (though some of the questions were pretty general). There's always next time.. :)

Nopes, grew up in the "Hindi heartland", UP, so no Marathi jingles for there.. :-)

Now, Now...Pleiades Aunty :) You have touched a raw nerve.
Girlfriend....Makes my heart ache!!!

And regarding the direct and pass round, I faced a similar problem at your insti in the Biz Quiz by Samanth. All our directs were complete bouncers.

"Kasla Vichar Kartoy Ramayya"... Charminar chappar! think it was an asbestos roof sheet brand.

The line: "Kasla Vichar Kartoy Ramayya" was very popular in school and college for addressing any person lost in thought!
